Michael Davies
My work is concerned with creating and transforming images in order to find a symbolic representation of the world that reaches into the fundamental, the quantum of our lives. I am interested in the potential for creating new images by applying progressively more refined transformations to often randomly selected source material. Perhaps it is possible to create images with the power to bridge theoretical divides in ways in which science, philosophy and psychology alone cannot; images that might help us to understand our true nature and place in this world.
If a fundamental description of the world exists, perhaps it is an abstract truth, something that cannot be described directly? Without a definable end to truth, how can we get closer? Is there truth in process?
A key theme in my work is exploring the difference between the intuitive act of painting and the mechanical processes of computer processing; seeking a balance between pixels and particles of ink, collage and computer generated composite images. The tension between digital and analogue methods of representation is a metaphor for the deeper questions we face about the nature of reality and life, for it seems that no single expression of ‘truth’ can be found, instead we have many opposing theories co-existing, all are ‘true’ but only from different points of view.
If there is any truth to be found, does it have any warmth… is there something that all the equations and definitions cannot uncover, something with aesthetic and emotional integrity?
